Best Food for Senior Dogs With No Teeth or Bad Teeth

Dogs with few or no teeth usually do best on canned pâté or soaked kibble. What to try, how to switch over a week, and when a sore mouth needs a vet first.

Your senior dog takes a mouthful of kibble, chews on one side, and half of it falls back on the floor. For a dog with few or no teeth, the easy fix is soft food: canned pâté or loaf, or their usual kibble soaked until soft. Colin Adley, DVM, writing for the Well Pets veterinary dental practice, says a toothless dog can still have an excellent quality of life, and many go back to their normal diet, even kibble, once they adjust.

Quick pick: Start with a soft, complete senior wet food like Purina Pro Plan Senior 7+ Chicken and Rice Entrée (#ad), and soak the kibble you already use.

When it's the mouth, not the food

VCA lists these signs of dental disease: pawing at the mouth, chewing with obvious discomfort, dropping food, trouble swallowing, heavy drooling, blood in the saliva and bad breath. If you see them, book a dental exam before you change food. Soft food doesn't treat a painful tooth. Read is my old dog too old for dental cleaning under anesthesia?
