Vets count a dog as senior in about the last 25% of its expected lifespan. Small breeds often reach it at 8 to 12, giant breeds at 6 or 7. Signs and what to change.
A dog is considered a senior in roughly the last 25% of its expected lifespan, according to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) life stage guidelines. Bigger dogs have shorter lives, so they get there sooner: the American Kennel Club (AKC) says small breeds often become seniors between 8 and 12 years old, while giant breeds may reach that stage at 6 or 7.

| Dog size | Usually senior at | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Small breeds | About 8 to 12 years | AKC |
| Medium and large breeds | In between, earlier for bigger dogs | AKC |
| Giant breeds | As early as 6 or 7 years | AKC |
| Any dog | Last 25% of expected lifespan | AAHA |
AAHA does not set fixed ages, because lifespan depends on breed, size and health.
The AKC lists these common signs:
Nighttime restlessness, pacing and new house-training accidents can point to cognitive decline, so mention them to your vet.
1. Vet visits: Tufts veterinarian Dr. Sarah Crain recommends senior checkups once or twice a year (AKC).
2. Footing: add non-slip rugs where your dog walks and turns. See hidden floor hazards.
3. Rest: give stiff joints a thick, supportive bed. The KOPEKS 7-inch orthopedic bed (#ad) adds a waterproof liner for accidents.
4. Jumping: a ramp such as the KUVETO wooden dog ramp (#ad), which the maker lists at a 20-degree slope, saves jumps on and off the bed.
5. Exercise: switch to shorter, more frequent walks. See safe exercise for sore joints.
It depends on size. A giant breed may be a senior at 6 or 7, while small breeds usually reach it later, between 8 and 12 (AKC).
For many medium and large dogs, yes. Small breeds may only be entering their senior years at 10.
Once or twice a year, according to a Tufts veterinarian quoted by the AKC. Go sooner if you notice new signs.
