Cloudy, blue-gray eyes after age 8 are usually nuclear sclerosis, a normal change that rarely affects vision. Learn how it differs from cataracts, 5 causes of cloudy eyes, and when it is an emergency.
If your old dog's eyes look cloudy or bluish-gray, the most common reason is nuclear (lenticular) sclerosis, a normal aging change in the lens that usually appears after 8 to 10 years of age and does not cause significant vision loss. Cataracts look similar but are whiter, can block vision and sometimes lead to glaucoma. A vet eye exam is the only way to tell them apart, so book one when you first notice the change.
1. Nuclear sclerosis. A hazy, blue-gray look in the center of both eyes. It is part of normal aging, and most dogs still see well. 2. Cataracts. A white or milky spot or full cloud in the lens. Small cataracts barely affect sight; mature cataracts can cause blindness. 3. Diabetes. Diabetic cataracts often form quickly, generally within 5 to 6 months of diabetes starting. 4. Glaucoma. High pressure inside the eye can make the eye look cloudy or blue, red and painful. This is an emergency. 5. Corneal problems. Ulcers, dry eye or scarring on the surface of the eye can look cloudy, often with squinting or discharge.
Nuclear sclerosis is usually even, soft and bluish, and appears in both eyes at about the same time. Cataracts are often whiter, can be patchy, may affect one eye more than the other, and can make your dog bump into things or hesitate on stairs. Your vet may dilate the pupils with eye drops to look closely at the lens.
1. Take a clear photo of both eyes in good light so your vet can compare later. 2. Watch for vision changes: bumping into furniture, missing toys, or trouble at night. 3. Keep floors clear and furniture in the same place. 4. Add soft lights in hallways and near stairs for night trips. 5. Talk to your dog before you touch them so they are not startled.
Nuclear sclerosis needs no treatment. Cataracts that affect vision can sometimes be removed by a veterinary ophthalmologist; your vet will check whether your dog is a good candidate. Glaucoma, ulcers and dry eye each need prompt medical treatment.
